About The Painting
With its echos of C17th pastoral genre painting, ‘Country Folk’ reflects the disparities of status that characterise the make up of English rural society. The image itself evolved from a sequence of random procedures, a process of discovery-within-the-act of painting - not unlike reading tea leaves - in which a subject is ‘recognised’ rather than imposed.
About The Artist
Chris Bruce lives and works in Cornwall. He has a BA in Fine Art from Cheltenham Art College (2002), and an MA in Contemporary Visual Art from Falmouth University (2008). He would classify himself as a narrative artist, concerned with various forms of story-telling and the populist tropes of the contemporary political conversation. His work has appeared in the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Exhibition (20 & 21), the Wells Art Contemporary (22 & 25), the Jackson’s Art Prize (Acrylic Prize 24) and the John Ruskin Prize (25). In addition to his painting & drawing practice, he posts political cartoons on Instagram and in online news publications (@bruce_works15).
With his practice spanning painting, drawing, and political cartooning, his work is rooted in an exploration of pareidolia - the human tendency to find patterns and stories within chaos. In his paintings, figures and subjects emerge gradually through layers of mark-making, the composition evolving iteratively until a story reveals itself.
