Beautiful French majolica oyster plates from the famed faïencerie of St. Clément, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890s. Perfect for entertaining or display, each plate features six creamy white scallop shell-shaped wells surrounding a center mignonette or lemon well, all set against a rich bluish-jade green basketweave background. Framed with a molded brown rope border, these plates reflect the same nautical and naturalistic details as the coordinating master server platter. The high-gloss majolica glaze enhances the depth and texture of each shell, giving the set a luminous and tactile appeal that’s as charming as it is functional. These plates offer both beauty and history — ideal for collectors, hostesses, or anyone drawn to the romance of French entertaining. Display them on a wall or set a stunning seafood table. *Plates sold individually. Available master server/platter sold separately.
Oyster plates became must-have tableware in the mid-to-late 19th century, especially in France where oysters were prized delicacies. These plates were designed not only to present oysters beautifully but also to keep them cool when chilled before serving. With their delicately modeled shell forms and vibrant glazes, majolica oyster plates brought a sense of opulence and festivity to formal dining.
Established in 1758 near Lunéville by Jacques Chambrette, the St. Clément faïence factory became a leading name in French ceramics, eventually earning the designation of Royal Supplier to Marie Antoinette’s Trianon. Known for combining artistry with utility, St. Clément majolica pieces were highly prized throughout Europe. After its acquisition by Keller and Guérin in 1892, the factory continued producing finely glazed ceramics that remain collectible to this day.
