Antique Victorian Bag Miser's Purse Silver Steel Beads Gray Crochet
Double sided miser bag that has a long and narrow central section in gray crocheted silk, with each side being a steel beaded pouch with fringed loops at the bottoms. One side is checkerboard and the other is banded. The middle "neck" section has a slit and the two rings on either side slide up and down for closure. You can carry it in your hand, pin it to your outfit, or sling it through a waistband. The curious term of "Miser Bag" is thanks to the restricted way you got access to your money as you have to slide the rings away from the pouch and then wiggle your fingers in through the narrow slit into the pouch! Research reveals that the two different pouches are to possible delineate coin value (i.e., one had gold the other silver, etc).
No markings, it is in EXCELLENT shape rare for an item of this age and delicacy. The only flaw to note is that the seam where the looped fringe meets the checkerboard couch shows some wear and perhaps one missing loop strand.
Length, laid flat, end to end 27" Width of pouch section 3.75"
