Linn Klimax Solo 800 Mono Power Amplifier

The Klimax Solo 800 is Linn's reference monoblock power amplifier at £75,000 per unit — 800 watts of Class AB output with Adaptive Bias Control, and no fans. A stereo system requires two units. It is part of Linn's Klimax range and sits above the Klimax Solo 500 in power output and thermal management approach: where the 500 uses a fan-cooled hybrid matrix, the 800 is entirely passively cooled.

Delivering 800 W from a passively cooled chassis is not straightforward engineering. Linn's solution is Adaptive Bias Control applied across sixteen output transistors simultaneously, with real-time monitoring and adjustment of each transistor's bias current. The result is an amplifier that generates substantially less heat than a conventional Class AB design at equivalent power levels, because the crossover distortion that conventional Class AB designs manage thermally is removed from the circuit behaviourally.

Adaptive Bias Control at Scale

The same Adaptive Bias Control technology found in the Klimax Solo 500 and the Linn 360 loudspeaker's internal amplification is applied here across sixteen output transistors rather than fewer. Each transistor's bias current is monitored and adjusted in real time — not as a thermal correction, but as a continuous active optimisation of the operating point.

The practical consequence is a THD figure below 0.001% at rated output, and a signal-to-noise ratio above 120 dB. These figures are not unusual for amplifiers at lower power levels; achieving them at 800 W into 4 Ω, without fans, is a different engineering problem.

At low listening levels — where most music spends most of its dynamic time — the benefit of Adaptive Bias Control is the removal of crossover distortion from what would otherwise be a Class AB operating region. Low-level detail, transient leading edges, and the spatial information encoded in a recording are resolved without the characteristic hardness that conventional Class AB designs introduce at reduced signal levels.

Build and Thermal Design

The Klimax Solo 800 chassis is a substantial machined aluminium structure at 380 × 170 × 460 mm and approximately 28 kg per unit. The thermal mass of the chassis itself, combined with the reduced heat generation from Adaptive Bias Control, handles the thermal load without active cooling. There are no fans to start, stop, or introduce acoustic noise — the amplifier is silent in operation in the literal sense.

Assembly is carried out by hand at Linn's Glasgow factory. Input connections include balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA. Speaker terminals accommodate most binding post terminations.

It suits demanding loudspeaker loads — speakers with complex impedance curves, low sensitivity, or physically large drivers that require substantial current delivery for proper control — and listening rooms where dynamic headroom is important.
