The Culpeper pub in Spitalfields, London, recently opened its first floor restaurant kitchen — the four-floor building dates back to 1884 and takes its name from the renowned 17th century herbalist, botanist and physician Nicholas Culpeper. This lovely pub has a rooftop bar where you can gaze at the stars while enjoying a cocktail.
Culpeper lived round the corner at 92 Commercial Street. Culpeper translated medical books into English from Latin so that people could diagnose themselves. He came to Spitalfields to be outside the jurisdiction of the College of Physicians. He was one of the first to propose that healthcare should be given free as a basic human right, treating local people without charge each day at his surgery in Red Lion House.
