Owl is sacred to many goddesses, Athene and Lilith among them. Creatures of the night, able to see in total darkness, Owls have gained wisdom and insight which they may choose to offer their human partners. Owl is not for morning people. Owl stays up late at night, hunting out the truth hidden in darkness.
Owls have long been thought to be messengers and harbingers, often bringing news of death. Their sudden, silent appearance can certainly be disturbing to those unused to their ways. Since they are awake when most of us are asleep, Owl has resonance to the deep subconscious, and my be called upon to help us dream or to work out our shadow issues. Deeper self-awareness is thus gained using Owl as a guide into the darker parts of the psyche to hunt out the hidden or obscured realities. To make its way in the unknown realms, Owl is thought to be one of the great shape-shifter Spirit Guides, or at times to become invisible.
My Owl oil does contain a synthetic, Danoul Oud, which really does smell like the rare, endangered and fabulously expensive real thing. The rest of the scents are shadowy, subtle, and mysterious, as befits the Owl. I make Owl on Wednesdays to correspond with Athena, and on the Full Moon, although I can see reason to make it on the Dark Moon. Let me know if you have a preference.
