Issued by Vatican City in 1958, this striking set commemorates the “Sede Vacante” period following the death of Pope Pius XII. During this interregnum, the papal throne is vacant until a new pope is elected.
The design features the traditional umbraculum (papal umbrella) and crossed keys of Saint Peter, symbols used by the Vatican administration during the vacancy. The inscription “SEDE VACANTE MCMLVIII” marks the historic transition year that preceded the election of Pope John XXIII.
Printed in clean typographic style, the series was produced in several denominations including 15 Lire (yellow), 25 Lire, and 60 Lire, intended for regular postal use during this brief period. Because Sede Vacante issues are released only during papal transitions, they are particularly sought after by Vatican and thematic collectors.
