This 30 centimes stamp from Rwanda, issued in 1983, features the Dracaena steudneri, locally known as “Umuhati.” Illustrated by Chalot, the design shows two perspectives of the hardy African plant—its dense rosette of sword-like leaves and the tall tree-like form it assumes when mature. The Dracaena steudneri is native to East and Central Africa and often used in traditional medicine and as an ornamental plant. This issue reflects Rwanda’s 1980s botanical series celebrating indigenous flora.
