These striking vintage oyster plates from the famed HB Quimper faïencerie showcase the vibrant artistry and rich heritage of French pottery. Handcrafted in Brittany, France, circa 1940s, each plate features six bright yellow oyster wells around a central sauce or lemon well, combining classic French elegance with a modernist edge. Set against a glossy black background, punctuated by intricate white feathering and small orange dots, the bright color contrast and stylized flourishes reflect the distinctive artistry of Quimper faïence. While originally part of a set of eight, each plate is sold individually, allowing you to curate your own collection or add to an existing one. Their bold palette and eye-catching form make them ideal for oyster service or dramatic display.
This hand painted tin-glazed faïence, known as Quimper pottery, has been produced in Quimper for over three centuries. The HB Quimper pottery was established by Jean Baptiste Bousquet in 1685 after he received a royal license from King Louis XIV. Bousquet's kilns in Locmaria laid the foundation for what would become one of France’s most iconic ceramic manufacturers, known for its colorful, handpainted wares, rooted in Breton folk art and regional tradition. These plates bear the distinctive HB Quimper mark on the reverse, along with handpainted pattern codes, affirming their authenticity and provenance.
The oyster plate as a serving piece rose to popularity in 19th century France, a reflection of the country’s obsession with seafood dining and aesthetic presentation. These Quimper plates elevate the tradition with a uniquely Breton interpretation that blends utility with vibrant folk art charm. Whether used for oyster service, wall display, or as graphic décor, these pieces celebrate French coastal living with panache.
