Our License Plate Birdhouse is handmade in Provincetown with cedar 1 x 6 stock and two Massachusetts license plates. It has vent holes under the eaves and drain holes in the floor. The access hole on the front is 1.5-inch wide to prevent unwanted visitors, rimmed with a rubber grommet to protect their little birdie feet, and does not have a perch. (The birds that will live here don’t need a perch, but it makes access easier for predators like squirrels and larger birds.)
Cedar is naturally water-resistant, but we still gave it a couple of coats of polyurethane on the outside only. (Experts recommend leaving the inside uncoated because birds prefer raw, natural wood near their chicks.) Secure it to a wall, fence post, or tree trunk using screws in the two pre-drilled holes. Because you have full access to the inside, it can be adapted to sit atop a post, as well.
The front and roof are both made from real, used license plates, so condition will vary. The front slides into grooves in the sides, and then the plates are secured to the wood with three thumb screws. Remove the screws and slide the entire assembly up for easy access to clean between tenants.
We make these standard with Massachusetts license plates, but they can be ordered for any other state, province, or territory, as long as we can get our hands on two 6" x 12" license plates. Prices are set based on the availability of the plates.
