The Government recommends that all women take 400 µg of Folic Acid from at least one month before conception until the 12th week of pregnancy to support maternal tissue growth. Low levels of folic acid risks the development of neural tube brain defects, such as spina bifida.
Supplemental Folic Acid intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus.
