Rega Kyte Bookshelf Speaker

The Kyte is Rega's entry-level loudspeaker — a compact 2-way standmount designed to deliver the Rega sound character in a form that suits smaller rooms, tighter budgets, and the Rega system at its entry point. It is a product that reflects Rega's priorities as a manufacturer: handmade drivers, an unconventional cabinet material chosen for acoustic rather than cosmetic reasons, and crossover components wound in-house. The result is a speaker that sounds better than a comparison of its dimensions and price would lead you to expect.

Every driver in the Kyte is built by hand at Rega's Southend-on-Sea facility. The MX-125 bass-mid unit uses a four-layer voice coil — more layers than the standard two — which increases the magnetic force factor and improves sensitivity. The ZRR high-frequency unit is Rega's own design, produced in-house. The crossover components are wound at the factory rather than sourced from a supplier's catalogue. For a speaker at this price, that level of in-house manufacture is unusual and reflects an engineering approach that prioritises performance over cost reduction.

Where the Kyte Sits in the Rega Range

The Kyte is the entry loudspeaker in the Rega range, designed to complete the Rega System One or partner the io and Brio MK7 at the entry and mid levels of the amplifier range.

The Rega Aya is the step up — a full floorstander with a GRC cement cabinet, three drivers in a 2.5-way band-pass configuration, and 10 years of development behind it. The Aya goes deeper, plays louder, and suits a larger room; the Kyte is the right choice for a smaller space, a compact system, or a listener who does not need floorstander bass extension.

At 89dB sensitivity with a nominal 6Ω impedance, the Kyte is easy to drive. The io at 30 watts will control it comfortably; the Brio MK7 at 50 watts will give it useful dynamic headroom. Either is a natural partner.

Sound and Performance

The phenolic resin cabinet is the starting point for understanding the Kyte's sound. Most loudspeaker enclosures use MDF — a material that is easy to machine and finish, but which is not particularly inert. Phenolic resin is significantly stiffer and less resonant; it does not store and release energy in the way that MDF does. The ceramic cross-bracing inside the cabinet adds further rigidity, reducing the internal standing waves and panel vibrations that colour a loudspeaker's output. A quieter cabinet produces a quieter background and a cleaner midband.

The bass reflex design, rear ported, extends the low-frequency output below what the driver could produce in a sealed box of the same volume. The MX-125's four-layer voice coil drives the cone with greater control and precision than a two-layer equivalent; the result is better transient response and tighter bass definition — qualities that contribute directly to the timing and rhythmic engagement that Rega builds into its entire range.

The ZRR tweeter handles the upper octaves with Rega's characteristic approach: clean and uncoloured, without the brightness that some soft-dome designs introduce. The in-house wound crossover allows Rega's engineers to specify and control the component quality directly — the crossover point, the slopes, and the component tolerances are all set to match the specific behaviour of the Kyte's drivers.

Across the frequency range, the Kyte is tonally honest and rhythmically direct — a speaker that invites long listening rather than short demonstrations. Award recognition from Tone Audio and Stereo+ reflects what the speaker does well at its price point.

Build Quality and Design

The Kyte is available in Black. It measures 325 × 188 × 232mm (H × W × D) with the rear foot fitted and weighs 3.73kg each — light enough to handle easily and place precisely on a stand. The finish is clean and purposeful: Rega's design aesthetic at the speaker level, as at the electronics level, is functional rather than fashionable.

A stand mount adaptor (sold separately) allows the Kyte to be used with a speaker stand as a true standmount. It can also be positioned on a bookshelf, with the rear port requiring a small amount of clearance from the back wall — a minimum of 30cm is a reasonable starting point. Flexible positioning is part of the design brief.

Hand-assembled in Southend-on-Sea. Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

Connectivity and System Matching

The Kyte connects via standard speaker terminals — single-wire. At 89dB sensitivity and 6Ω nominal impedance, it presents an easy load for any amplifier. The 80W power handling per channel means it will work with amplifiers from the io upwards without risk; staying within that limit is straightforward at typical listening volumes.

The natural system partners are Rega's own amplifiers and sources. The io at 30 watts — or the Rega System One — provide everything the Kyte needs for a compact, complete Rega system. The Brio MK7 adds more headroom and a DAC for those who connect a streamer alongside a turntable.

For vinyl, the Kyte pairs naturally with the Rega Planar 1 or Planar 2 via the onboard phono stage in the io or Brio. Dave or Chris at Martin's can advise on stands and positioning for a specific room.

Who Is It For?

The Kyte is for the listener building a compact Rega system — a System One owner looking for a speaker partner, or someone choosing the io or Brio MK7 as their amplifier and wanting a speaker that completes the Rega aesthetic and engineering philosophy at the same level. It suits smaller rooms where a floorstander would overwhelm the space, and listeners who prioritise clarity, timing, and tonal accuracy over deep bass extension. Those who need more room-filling performance should look at the Aya.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The Kyte is available to hear in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will have it set up in a matching Rega system. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can advise on stands, positioning, and the right system to build around the Kyte.

Reach them at [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
