One of those wonderful little items that has multiple points of interest. Not only is it an exceptional read, akin to M'Cheyne's Memoirs, but fantastic provenance.

W. H. Hewitson was just slightly younger than M'Cheyne. Being friendly with the Bonars and having come under the influence of the revivalist Haldane brothers, Hewitson developed a deep, early piety. M'Cheyne sought him out while still a candidate for ministry in an effort to secure him as his Associate pastor. It was a match made in Heaven. After M'Cheyne's death, Hewitson served as a missionary in Madeira and Trinidad and then returned to pastor in Scotland. His memoir is a devotional classic that forms almost the backbone of D. M. M'Intyre's "Hidden Life of Prayer." Of course M'Intyre was Andrew Bonar's son-in-law, so there was a deep familiarity there.

Additionally, this charmer, in lovely half leather, has an original presentation plate from Tusculum, Near Bideford in North Devon dated to 1855 and signed by William Hake! William Hake at that time was running a board school. It was previour to this that Mary Groves [dauther of Anthony Groves] was helping William in his home while his wife was ill. When George Muller would come to stay, he noted the godliness of Mary and they were married. Hake was further an influence and long-time friend of both Robert C. Chapman [with whom he co-pastored at Barnstaple] and George Muller.
