Celebrate the elegance of French table tradition with this exquisite vintage asparagus cradle, a richly hued piece of majolica from the famed Salins-les-Bains faïence factory. Crafted in the early to mid-20th century, this hand-molded earthenware dish was designed specifically to cradle and serve tender asparagus spears — an ingredient long cherished in French gastronomy.
The cradle features a scalloped form with softly upturned edges and rests on four integrated feet for graceful elevation. Glazed in a beautifully variegated palette of crisp white, mottled greens, and deep violets, the design mimics the natural colors of fresh asparagus with vivid realism. The textural veining of the border and the vibrant glazes are emblematic of the barbotine technique, a hallmark of French majolica ware.
Though utilitarian in purpose, asparagus cradles like this were both functional and ornamental, appearing on springtime tables as a sign of refinement and seasonality. Today, they serve as extraordinary statement pieces — ideal for collectors of antique French faïence or as a centerpiece on a curated table.
The earthenware producer Salins was established in 1857 on the site of an old Capuchin convent that was converted to a faïence poterie. The factory was known for its distinctive majolica and transferware ceramics, with the bulk of their majolica production consisting of specialized tableware forms like artichoke and asparagus plates, platters and cradles.
