Glutathione may be the "mother of all antioxidants" and it's a key soldier in our body's ongoing battles with age-related conditions, but it's not easy to really increase our levels of it through direct supplementation, since it gets rapidly oxidized in the GI tract. Glutathione has a number of important biochemical roles in the body, such as helping to make DNA, proteins, and prostaglandin; transporting other amino acids; and activating enzymes. It's also involved in repairing DNA, metabolizing toxins and carcinogens, assisting in immune system function, and preventing oxidative cell damage – which is to say, it acts as a powerful cellular antioxidant.
