“In 1837 the Petrie family settled in Brisbane, at the at time a village of ‘about ten buildings’.  Their son, Tom Petrie, was brought up amongst the Aboriginals, learning their language and habits as one accepted into their circle: ‘You learned our tongue, our ways and secrets, and you never broke our laws nor ill-treated us, but were always kind… We looked on you as ne of ourselves’.  These reminiscences, full of vivid people and happenings in early  Brisbane, provide a readable, fascinating vision of the colonial life of Queensland: in particular of the Aboriginals, seen through the eyes of one who was their  friend.”
